It is important to understand that while there are several very effective bi polar medications available today, they aren’t right for everyone. Each person suffers from bipolar to a different degree. The symptoms are often similar but affect each person differently. In addition each of us has a unique body chemistry so we react differently to the same medications.

No Cure For Bipolar Disorder

There is no cure for bipolar so the next best option is to find the right combination of medications and therapy that will help the individual live a normal life. This often takes plenty of trial and error. The process can be long and it can be frustrating. Many of these bipolar meds also have side effects that have to be dealt with as well.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with bi polar disorder it is a mental illness that results in the person suffering from extreme moods swings. They can be very happy today and extremely depressed tomorrow. The various bipolar meds work to help keep things balanced so they aren’t shifting from one extreme to the other continually.

Lithium Most Commonly Prescribed Med

Lithium is the most commonly used bi polar med today because of the high success rate it has for those who suffer from bipolar disorder. Most people have to take Lithium for a couple of weeks before they notice a difference in their mood swings. It can take several months for the full effects of Lithium to kick in so the behaviors are under control.

Lithium Has Side Effects

While Lithium is definitely a successful bipolar medication, it doesn’t come without some harsh side effects to contend with. The most common ones include nausea, tiredness, fatigue, shaking, and chronic thirst. The side effects generally go away in time but they can be very difficult to deal with in the mean time.

It is important for the doctor to monitor your use of Lithium because it can result in significant weight gain. It can also affect sodium levels and blood pressure. Many times those individuals who already have some health issues can’t be given Lithium.

If Lithium isn’t successful many doctors with try an anti psychotic next. These generally aren’t recommended for long term use though. An antidepressant is often commonly given as well. Lithium is often combined with one or both of these in the most severe bipolar disorder cases.
